As healthcare facilities rally around cleaning protocols and new technologies that curb infectious disease, flooring plays an important role. Often, a patient or visitor's first impression of cleanliness is how the floors appear when they walk into a health care facility.
In addition to being one of the most used and most soiled surfaces of a facility, flooring solutions in health care settings have the potential to make a dramatic aesthetic statement; test the limits of durability with daily wear and tear as well as carry tremendous weight in enhancing safety.
Building a floor care program that gives patients and visitors the right impression poses unique challenges.
With a wide array of spaces to consider — from operating suites to patient rooms to commercial kitchens - each area has its own special concerns, and it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure that proper flooring is selected and installed.
Priorities for any health care space is that the flooring system is easy to clean and can withstand the use and abuse specific to the environment. To be effective, flooring must support both patients and staff with physical and visual comfort, as well as being durable and easy to maintain for infection control. Key attributes include safety, comfort, acoustics, mobility, ease of maintenance, infection control, and aesthetics. Flooring should provide stability and traction for both foot and wheeled traffic to prevent injury. It also needs to be hygienic with a waterproof installation and compatible with disinfectants used to maintain a clean environment.
Although choosing a flooring option that fulfills a vision and balances required functionality can be a challenge, using the right products, procedures, tools, and maintenance processes will improve the facility's image with patients, staff and visitors.
